On June 26, 2019 the Ford company for the first time presented its new brainchild - a subcompact urban crossover called "Puma". The official premiere of the novelty took place in September of the same year at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Note that from 1997 to 2002, the company already had a car with the same name - however, then it was a stylish coupe, built on the basis of the Fiesta model.

It is also known that the new Ford Puma will be the successor to the not very successful EcoSport crossover, which in recent years has sagged in sales around the world, where it was officially presented.

But let's return to the hero of our review and carefully study the appearance, interior and technical characteristics of the new item.

Exterior Puma

The new Ford Puma is stylish and attractive. True, we must admit that it is only remotely similar to a crossover. To us, the car looks more like a heavily pumped hatchback, but, as they say, the manufacturer knows better.

The "muzzle" of the novelty sports large high-mounted headlights of the head optics, a proprietary false radiator and a structural front bumper, where the manufacturer has placed a trapezoidal air intake and spectacularly designed fog lamps.

The knocked down and dynamic profile showcases puffy wheel arches, embossed sides, compact exterior mirrors with thin legs, a domed roofline and a billowing window line abutting a wide C-pillar.

The crossover feed is represented by expressive side lights, a compact trunk lid, supplemented by a fairly large spoiler, as well as a massive bumper with a decorative strip, large rear fog lights and a trapezoidal exhaust pipe.

The standard ground clearance height is 167 mm, which is a little on the one hand, and on the other - enough for comfortable movement both in the city and on a bumpy road.

The car is available in a special "sporty" version of the ST-Line and offers a choice between 10 body colors. By the way, in the ST-Line version the car is 21 mm longer than its "civilian" "brother".

If the external appearance of Ford Puma is original and distinctive, then the interior decoration almost completely repeats that of the latest generation Ford Fiesta.

Directly in front of the driver is a chubby three-spoke steering wheel with a sporty cut lower rim and a well-read instrument panel (optionally represented by a virtual instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch display).

In the central part of the dashboard rises an 8-inch screen of the Sync 3 infotainment complex, several audio buttons and a stylish climate control unit.


The quality of materials and workmanship is at a very high level, however, it has long become one of the hallmarks of Ford cars.

For the front passengers, the manufacturer has prepared comfortable seats with good lateral support, a large number of adjustments and additional options in the form of heating and a massage function for the lumbar zone.

Between the seats is a relatively small armrest and a parking brake poker. The second row of seats promises a sufficient level of comfort to accommodate three riders, however, it is not necessary to expect that the level of free space behind the car will be able to compete with the S-class car.

The trunk volume pleases not only with its shape, but also with one of the best spaciousness in the class - in a five-seater configuration, it is equal to 486 liters, which includes an 80-liter box located under the raised floor.

By the way, even heavily soiled things can be safely transported in the box, since thanks to the presence of special drainage holes, it can be washed directly from the hose.

If necessary, the backrests of the rear sofa can be folded down (proportion 40:60), thereby more than doubling the volume of the loading space.

Separately, we will talk about the design of the ST-Line version, which can be recognized by the metal pedals, the aluminum gearshift knob, the black ceiling and red stitching on the steering wheel, seats and the gear knob.

One of two types of engine can be installed under the hood of Ford Puma, while his partner is an uncontested 6-speed manual transmission, which transmits torque exclusively to the front axle.

  1. The base is a 1-liter EcoBoost petrol line, producing 125 liters. with. and a torque limit of 170 Nm, available at 6000 and 1700 rpm, respectively. With it, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 in 10 seconds. and develops a maximum 191 km / h. The average declared fuel consumption does not exceed 4.6 l / 100 km.
  2. This is followed by a 1-liter turbocharged engine, but supplemented by the EcoBoost Hybryd hybrid system. Such a power plant is available in two boosts - for 125 and 155 "horses", as well as 210 and 240 Nm of torque. The younger "motor" allows you to accelerate to "hundreds" in 9.8 seconds. and develop the maximum 191 km / h, while the elder does the same exercise in 9 seconds. and accelerates to peak 200 km / h. Average fuel consumption in both cases does not exceed 4.5 l / 100 km.


Let's talk separately about the EcoBoost Hybryd system, which can operate in one of two modes: to supplement and replace torque, where in the first case, 20 Nm of torque is added to the capabilities of the internal combustion engine, and in the second, the load on the motor is reduced.

At the heart of the new Ford Puma is the reinforced and slightly modified Ford B bogie, familiar from the Fiesta. The front axle of the crossover demonstrates independent suspension with MacPherson struts, and the rear has a semi-independent structure and is represented by a torsion beam.

The rack-type steering is supplemented with an electric booster, and the braking system flaunts disc brakes on both axles (the front one is additionally equipped with a ventilation function).

Price and level of equipment Ford Puma 2020

On the European market, the new product is offered in three equipment options: Titanium, Titanium X and ST-Line X. The minimum cost of a car in Germany is 23.15 thousand euros (about 1.64 million rubles). For this money, a potential buyer can count on the following equipment:

  • external mirrors with electric drive, heating function and repeaters of turns;

  • LED DRL and low beam headlights;

In a more expensive configuration, the car can be supplemented with:

  • premium speaker system with 10 speakers and a subwoofer;

  • panoramic roof;
  • extended list of security systems;
  • combined seat trim.


The ST-Line X version is distinguished by the presence of decorative red stitching on the steering wheel, gear knob and seats, a fully virtual 12.3 ”tidy, decorative pedal pads, a sporty tuned suspension and special front and rear bumpers. By the way, the price tag for Ford Puma in the ST-Line X version starts at 26.9 thousand euros (about 1.9 million rubles).

Conclusion

The Ford Puma is a striking and modern compact crossover that has everything it needs to reclaim Ford's lost ground in the European market. This is a high-quality interior, a rich level of equipment, and stylish design, and high-performance, economical engines.

The only thing that is upsetting is that the car should not be expected in Russia. quite recently the company decided to leave the domestic market.
